Reading and Phonics

At Oasis Academy Longmeadow we teach reading skills daily and provide opportunities to read in all areas of the curriculum. We employ a systematic approach to phonics and other word reading strategies and seek to engender a life-long love of reading.

We are currently in a transitional period in our approach to teaching reading. As of September 2021, our Reception Class are using the phonics scheme Bookwings (formerly Storytime Phonics) to teach reading. Year 1 and 2 are currently still using Letters and Sounds for their phonics lessons, as we are introducing our new Bookwings approach in phases..

Children learn to recognise phonemes and graphemes, and to blend them to read words. They also learn to recognise common decodable words, and tricky words which are not decodable, by sight. In Year 1 and early Year 2 children receive 2 phonics lessons each day, focussing on reading sounds and words in the morning and segmenting to apply them to writing in the afternoon

From September 2022, all of the EYFS and Year 1 children will be using Bookwings.

The uniqueness of Book Wings Phonics is that the synthetic phonics teaching opportunities are embedded within the context of real books; books written by skilled and well-known writers and illustrators who know how to engage children and make them want to read for pleasure. The experiences the children have in Bookwings lessons are multi-sensory, exciting and memorable.

Once children are able to blend sounds to read simple words, they apply these by reading ‘learning to read’ books at home and school. Our learning to read books are banded by colour and level, which link directly to the phonics phases. This ensures that the books children read, match and support the phonics they are learning in class.
